What are endocrine disrupters?

Why these everyday chemicals matter for your hormones, fertility, and pregnancy.
When trying to conceive or navigating pregnancy, you’re likely already thinking carefully about what you eat, how you move, and what supplements to take. But what about the products you use on your skin, the containers your food comes in, or the candles burning in your home?
These may all be sources of endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) — ingredients that can interfere with your body’s natural hormone system. And that interference may have implications for fertility and pregnancy.
What Are Endocrine Disruptors?
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that mimic or block hormones in the body. These hormones control essential processes like ovulation, menstruation and thyroid function.
Common endocrine disruptors include:
-
Phthalates – often found in synthetic fragrances, plastics, and personal care products
-
Parabens – used as preservatives in skincare and cosmetics
-
BPA (bisphenol A) – present in many plastics and food containers
Everyday Exposure: What to Watch For
You might be surprised at how often we come into contact with endocrine disruptors. Some examples:
-
A “natural” lotion that still contains synthetic fragrance (phthalates)
-
Food heated in plastic containers
-
Cosmetics with parabens or phthalates
-
Household cleaning sprays, air fresheners, and scented candles
What You Can Do
The good news? You can significantly reduce exposure by making simple, conscious changes:
-
Switch to fragrance-free or naturally scented skincare
-
Avoid plastics — especially when heating food or drinks. Choose glass or stainless steel
-
Use personal care products made without parabens or phthalates
-
Read ingredient lists carefully (or shop with brands that do the work for you)
-
Choose products packaged in glass to avoid plastic leaching
